Brandon junior left-handed pitcher Chase Sparkman has orally committed to USF, Eagles coach Matt Stallbaumer said Thursday.

The 5-foot-10, 165-pound Sparkman gave the pledge to the Bulls in mid-January, Stallbaumer said.

Over the part two seasons, Sparkman has been one of the county's top relievers. Last year, he was 3-1 with a 1.64 ERA and 7 saves with 44 strikeouts in 38 1/3 innings pitched.

He bursted onto the high school scene during Brandon's Saladino Tournament winning run as a freshman, eventually earning a Times All-Hillsborough County first team selection. He was 7-0 with a 2.78 ERA and 4 saves.

Stallbaumer said USF became interested in Sparkman over the summer and their interest peaked in the fall.

He's the second Brandon player heading to USF. Senior centerfielder James Ramsay has signed with the Bulls. Also, first baseman Roderick Shoulders and shortstop Spencer Haynes have signed with State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (formerly Manatee Community College).
