Former Gaither standout Mike Danner , a sophomore at Polk State College, has committed to play at Division II University of Tampa beginning next school year, his father Dan said Tuesday morning.

Danner hit .357 with 58 runs, 13 doubles, five triples, five homers, 46 RBIs and 21 stolen bases last season as a freshman at Polk, earning first-team all-conference and first-team all-state honors.

Polk won the Florida College System Athletic Association (FCSAA) Suncoast Conference title with a 43-12 record and finished the season with a No. 11 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) national ranking.

Danner was also being recruited by FAU, East Carolina, Florida Southern, Barry, St. Leo and Nova Southeastern. A former third baseman at Gaither, he was recruited as an outfielder, his position at Polk.

At UT, Danner will be reunited with former Gaither teammate Drew Doty, a Santa Fe College sophomore who has also committed to the Spartans.

The Spartans roster already has 10 players with Hillsborough County ties, including two newcomers -- former Tampa Catholic catcher Shane Rowland (transfer from Miami) and ex-Jesuit outfielder Chris Pagliarulo (transfer from Boston College).
