Gaither SS Oscar Mercado, a junior who has verbally committed to Florida State, has been selected as a participant in the fifth annual Under Armour All-America baseball game. Mercado's name was one of 10 released along with the announcement that the game will be played Aug. 18 at Wrigley Field in Chicago and televised live on the MLB network. Once the full rosters (which typically contain rising seniors) are annouced, there will be 36 total selections.
Through 14 games, Mercado is hitting .425 with a team-high 17 hits, 15 runs scored, 14 RBIs, 8 stolen bases, two triples and a home run for Gaither (9-5), to go along with a pair of doubles. With his selection to the team, he joins the likes of Plant's Mychal Givens (2008 game), Brooks-DeBartolo's J.D. WIlliams (2009), Clearwater's Sean O'Brien (2009) and Jesuit's Lance McCullers (2010) as local players who have been tapped by Under Armour.
According to the press release, 91 of the 108 players from the past three games were selected in the MLB Amateur Draft, including 20 first round picks. Givens was a second-round pick of the Baltimore Orioles in 2009; the next year, Williams was selected by the Minnesota Twins in the 10th round and O'Brien opted to play colliegiately at Florida State. McCullers, in the class of 2012, is projected by many to be a top-5 draft pick.
