It's just a few days before Jesuit shortstop/pitcher Lance McCullers officially begins his sophomore season, but he's already found his college home.

McCullers, a Times All-Hillsborough County first-team selection as a freshman, verbally committed to the University of Florida in September, Jesuit coach Richie Warren said.

"I think he felt comfortable with (UF coach Kevin O'Sullivan) and the direction the UF program was heading," Warren said.

As a freshman, McCullers hit .443 with 9 doubles, 5 homer and 28 RBIs. He emerged as the Tigers' closer, saving 6 games and holding hitters to a .125 batting average.

He was named MaxPreps' National Freshman of the Year.

He is the son of former major league pitcher Lance McCullers.
