Baseball: Northeast's Bret Maxwell signs with Florida State

Northeast catcher Bret Maxwell verbally committed to Florida State during his sophomore year. He made it official two years later when he signed a letter of intent to play for the Seminoles next season.

Flanked by family, friends and administrators, Maxwell signed at Northeast's administration building on Wednesday morning.

“My dad (Greg) went to Florida State and I’ve always wanted to go there,’’ Maxwell said. “It’s a relief. There is always a little stress about getting the grades and stuff like that.’’

Maxwell hit .405 for the Vikings last season and had 10 doubles and 18 RBIs. When he came to Northeast as a freshman, he was a shortstop.

“We were about a week away from the season starting and we needed a catcher," Northeast coach Rob Stanifer said. “I knew Bret had a good arm and was a good athlete, so I asked him if he would catch. He’s been our catcher ever since."
