Wesley Chapel senior shortstop and four year letterman Geoff DeGroot has verbally committed to the University of Massachusetts Lowell.
DeGroot has been the Wildcats starter at shortstop since his freshman season. He was a Times first team all-North Suncoast selection last season after batting .397 with 24 runs and 10 RBIs. DeGroot, who possesses one of the area's steadiest gloves, was also named to the all-Sunshine Athletic Conference East first team in 2010.
DeGroot was impressed with the facilities at UMass-Lowell and cited immediate playing time as one of the factors that led to him settling on the River Hawks. UMass-Lowell plays its home games at LeLacheur Park and shares the facility with the Lowell Spinners, a Class A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox.
"The River Hawks have one of the best baseball facilities in college baseball with a pro-style clubhouse and stadium and they offer students a great education as part of the UMass university system," DeGroot said in a press release.
DeGroot was also looking at Appalachian State, Boston College, Notre Dame, USF and Washington and Lee.
