On Wednesday afternoon, Berkeley Prep seniors Amanda Esposito, Bubba Olivera and Trent Thompson etched their names not only on letters of intent, but into Buccaneers lore.
They became the school's first student-athletes to formally sign their paperwork in Berkeley's sleek new Straz Family Field House.
Olivera, a shortstop who enjoyed a breakthrough fall at wide receiver for the football team, signed a baseball scholarship with the University of North Florida. Thompson, a burly right-hander who posted a 5-1 record and 1.09 ERA as a junior, signed with UCF. Esposito, a member of the state tournament-bound volleyball team, signed a rowing scholarship at SMU.
The letters, signed on the first day of the NCAA's early signing period, are binding.
Olivera hit .315 last season with 13 RBI and a team-best 13 stolen bases. Thompson, who notched 60 strikeouts in 51.1 innings, also hit .310.
