Berkeley Prep rising junior C Kristin Hoover, a .593 hitter and all-state pick for the Buccaneers as a sophomore, has committed to the University of California-Berkeley, coach Al Bowman confirmed.

Hoover's commitment is non-binding; she can't sign with Cal until November 2013. As it stands, she's the first Berkeley player to commit to a Division I program in Bowman's five seasons.

Hoover, who hit .443 with 26 RBI as a freshman, has been an honorable-mention pick on the Times' all-Hillsborough County softball team each of the last two seasons.

Last spring, she compiled a .645 on-base and .870 slugging percentage, leading the Buccaneers (12-9) to the Class 4A playoffs. She eventually was selected as a second-team utility player on the Miracle Sports 4A all-state team.
