Freedom coach Tchecoy Blount has told the Tampa Bay Times he won't return for a third season with the Patriots.
"Administration wants to move in another direction," Blount said in a text message.
Freedom athletic director Elijah Thomas confirmed Blount's dismissal, but wouldn't elaborate on the reasons other than to cite the "different direction" the school is pursuing. Thomas said Blount's win-loss record -- 6-14 in two seasons -- was not a factor.
Freedom principal Chris Farkas couldn't immediately be reached Wednesday afternoon.
A former USF defensive end, Blount will remain at the school as an ESE teacher, Thomas said. Upon his hiring in March 2010, he vowed to bring stability to a program that has had none recently.
Freedom will be seeking its sixth coach since the start of the 2006 season.
And for those counting at home, it becomes the seventh school in Hillsborough County that will feature new coaches this fall. The others: Blake, Brandon, Chamberlain, Lennard, Riverview and Strawberry Crest. Riverview is expected to name its new coach next week.
