Boca Ciega’s Latavia Dempsey already whittled down her list of colleges she was considering to five and planned on visiting each school within the month.
But after taking a trip to Florida Atlantic, Dempsey decided she didn’t need to look at any others.
Dempsey, one of the most recruited girls basketball players in the state, orally committed to the Owls this past weekend. She already visited Florida International and canceled trips to Long Island, Marshall and Rhode Island.
“I really liked the campus and the coaching staff,” Demspey said. “FAU was the school that recruited me the most during the whole process. It was a good fit.”
Dempsey, a senior, was a first-team selection on the Times’ all-county and all-Suncoast lists after averaging 16.7 points and leading Boca Ciega to the Class 5A state final four for the second straight season. She has led the bay area in 3-point shooting the past two seasons and has 1163 career points with 162 career 3 pointers.
