Dean Eychner, the Hillsborough High defensive coordinator since 1998, has been named the new football coach at Brandon, principal Carl Green confirmed Thursday.

"He was very direct in answering my questions and seemed ready to take on the challenge," Green said. "He has worked at one of our feeder middle schools and worked at Bloomingdale, so I don't have to teach him the area.

Eychner, who beat out more than 30 other applicants, replaces John Lima, who compiled a 29-35 record over six seasons. The Eagles also made the playoffs in each of the past two seasons under Lima.

"He asked me, 'what do you think?' and I said 'go for it," said Hillsborough head coach Earl Garcia. "I'm very proud and very happy for him."
