Five former Hillsborough County head coaches and another from Pinellas County are among the 31 applicants for Brandon's football head coach position. Athletic director Tibor Kovacs released the names of the applicants following a request from the Tampa Bay Times.
In addition to the former head coaches—Hugh Dehnert (Leto), Gerold Dickens (Strawberry Crest), Todd Donohoe (Strawberry Crest), Mark Kantor (Gaither), Sean Washington (Blake) and Phil Hayford (Shorecrest Prep)—other applicants may be familiar as well. Chartric "Chuck" Darby was a defensive tackle on the 2003 Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers team, Ronald Selesky was a former assistant coach for the Tampa Bay Storm (and current director of player personnel for the AFL's Cleveland Gladiators) and Brian Surcy is a former Bloomingdale standout who went on to play for USF. The 31 applicants are the most any of the seven Hillsborough County openings drawn this offseason.
Brandon is seeking a replacement for John Lima, who, as reported by the Times on Dec. 15, was forced out after amassing a 29-35 record over six seasons. The Eagles have made the playoffs in each of the past two seasons.
