Brandon clinched a playoff berth with a 27-6 win against East Bay last week, but lost a key piece of the puzzle in the process.

Eagles coach John Lima said Wednesday that TB Tyrell Garner will not play in Thursday's regular-season finale or in next week’s Class 7A region quarterfinal at Tampa Bay Tech after injuring his right knee against the Indians.

“We are not 100 percent sure what is wrong,” Lima said. “He could probably play if we absolutely needed him, but he has a bright future after high school and I don’t want to risk that.”

Garner left in the third quarter against East Bay and did not return. The senior, who also is one of the Eagles' top defensive players, leads Brandon in carries (171), rushing yards (1,298) and total TDs (16).

Lima said converted DB Omar Ahmed will see an increased workload in the backfield along with sturdy junior Cyrus Dooley, who has run for more than 100 yards in three of the past four games.

“I don’t expect much of a dropoff,” Lima said.
