Cambridge Christian baseball coach Rick Shears is this year’s recipient of the Artie Vazquez Award, given every year during the Saladino Tournament to one outstanding Hillsborough County baseball coach by the West Coast Umpires Association.

In his third year as Lancers coach, Shears owns a record of 64-14 and has led Cambridge to the Class A state title game the past two seasons.

Cambridge has a good chance for a repeat trip to the state tournament in Port St. Lucie. The Lancers are 17-3 this season and the top seed in the upcoming A-9 district tournament. Cambridge also won the prestigious small-school Westminster tournament in South Florida.

The award will be presented before Friday night's Saladino Tournament championship game between Alonso and Plant at 7 p.m. at Brandon.
