Canterbury alum Brent O'Neal transfers from Citadel to Florida Tech

Former Canterbury standout Brent O'Neal has left the Citadel and is transferring to Florida Tech, Crusaders coach Bill Jones said.

“I think he got up there and was not quite ready for the regimen,” Jones said. “It wasn’t that he couldn’t handle it. I just don’t think it was the right fit for him.”

Last season, O'Neal rushed for more than 1,800 yards and scored 35 touchdowns. The Times' all-county first-teamer also helped lead Canterbury to its first district title and playoff victory.

In January, he narrowed his college list to Citadel, Navy and Presbyterian. He visited the Citadel and made his decision before taking any other trips.

Florida Tech will not start playing until 2013, meaning O’Neal will technically not lose any playing time after sitting out this season because of his transfer.

“Brent is a Florida kid and really wanted to play in the state,” Jones said. “It’s a great situation for him he’ll get a full ride next season and could be Florida Tech’s starting tailback in its inaugural season.”
