Friday's football matchup between Canterbury and Bishop McLaughlin has been postponed because the Hurricanes are dealing with a flu epidemic. The makeup date for the game is Thursday, Oct. 15 at 6 p.m. at Canterbury.

Bishop McLaughlin has dismissed students for the remainder of the week, Hurricanes athletic director Eddie Kenny said. Classes are scheduled to resume Monday.

Of Bishop McLaughlin's enrollment of 252 students, 100 were reported absent according to Frank Murphy, spokesman for the Catholic Archdiocese.

"We're just trying to get out in front of everything and to get the building clean," Kenny said. "Absences have risen over the course of the week. We want to stay ahead of it. We want to take the proactive approach without losing too much class time."

Other athletic events have been postponed including Thursday's volleyball match against Tampa Prep.

The football team, with 32 players, has had as many as six players out with flu symptoms.

A message left with Hurricanes football coach Marty Williams was not immediately returned.
