Clearwater Central Catholic hired James Margarella as its boys basketball coach, athletic director Keith Galley said.

Margarella replaces Rick Coia, who is now the coach at Oldsmar Christian.

Margarella coached Tarpon Springs' boys basketball team the past four seasons and led the Spongers to a 19-10 and runnerup spot in the Class 5A, District 11 tournament. Tarpon Springs lost in the first round to eventual state finalist Gibbs. It was the first time the Spongers had made the postseason since 1999. He also coached in the Pinellas County boys basketball all-star game this past season.

“We are very excited to have Coach Margarella as our new boys basketball coach," Galley said. "We believe he has the experience and ability to continue building our program so that we can be competitive with any school we play.”

CCC went 8-17 this past season, losing to Berkeley Prep 66-37 in the 3A-10 district semifinals.
