Clearwater Central Catholic continued its torrid start to the 2011 volleyball season with a victory in the Elite Division of the OVA High School Showcase volleyball tournament in Orlando over the weekend.
The Marauders went 5-0 at the tournament, defeating Harmony 25-19, 25-13 in the final to capture the championship.
In starting the season 8-0, CCC has lost just one game.
"We were happy with the competition at the tournament," CCC coach Stephen Shepherd said. "We played really well."
CCC won pool play matches over Gulf Coast, Tampa Prep and University to earn a spot in the Elite Division’s gold bracket. There, they upended St. Stephen’s Episcopal 25-20, 18-25, 15-8 before sweeping Harmony in the final.
Morgan O’Brien had eight kills and two aces and Kalyn Baird had a team-high nine kills in the championship match.
Defensively, Rachel Miller was the Marauders’ star. She had 58 digs for the tournament and was near-flawless in her serve-receive.
"I thought Rachel was our MVP for the tournament," Shepherd said.
CCC continues play tonight in an intriguing non-district matchup against perennial power Palm Harbor University.
