Clearwater Central Catholic quarterback Jeff Smith Jr. picked up his first offer from Wisconsin, Marauders coach John Davis said.
Smith shared quarterbacking duties with Blake Gomez before being named the full-time starter midway through last season. Showing off dual-threat capabilities, Smith emerged as a multidimensional force by throwing for 1,366 yards, rushing for 611 and accounting for 14 touchdowns to lead CCC to the Class 3A state championship game.
Davis said the Badgers offered Smith as an athlete.
"It was a call that came out of the blue," Davis said of Wisconsin. "But it certainly was a big offer for Jeff. That usually gets the ball rolling."
Indiana and Northwestern have also showed interest in Smith but wanted to see him play in the spring before offering. But schools might not get that opporunity because Smith is playing baseball with the Marauders, who are 10-0 and are expected to make a deep run in the postseason.
"I was definitely suprised," Smith said of the Wisconsin offer. "I'm in baseball right now, so I'll be going back and forth when May comes around."
