Central soccer midfielder Christian Velasquez will sit out the remainder of the regular season while he recovers from a knee injury he suffered in the first five minutes of a 4-1 loss to Hernando on Saturday.

Velasquez is a team captain and an integral component to the Bears’ playoff success.

“He’s going to be fine,” Central coach Alex Viramontes said. “I just don’t want to force him to play the rest of the regular season. I want him to be fine for districts.”

The extent of Velasquez’s injury is unknown. The senior will undergo an MRI today to see how much damage was done to the knee.

“He says that he has no pain,” Viramontes said. “He can almost do everything normally. He’s dying to play, but I told him to rest and let’s get healthy.”
