TAMPA — Dusk arrived before a clear-cut winner did in Tuesday’s King-Chamberlain boys match at Babe Zaharias Golf Course.
The Lions and Chiefs each tallied nine-hole team scores of 163 before Chamberlain prevailed in a one-hole playoff in the season opener for the Class 2A, District 10 rivals.
Defending district individual champion Gary Buffington led all scorers with 1-under-par 36, two shots better than Chiefs sophomore teammate Jeff Anderson. Both parred the par-4 No. 1 hole in the playoff to help clinch the triumph. Four players from each team competed in the playoff, decided by the lowest team total for the hole.
Senior Hunter McPhillips led King with 37. Freshman Sam Kloppenburg, King’s No. 6 player, finished with 38.
