Doug Aplin made his name in Hillsborough County coaching and playing on Chamberlain’s basketball court.

Now the school will name its gym after him, Chamberlain announced Tuesday afternoon.

The Chiefs will officially rename the gym in Aplin’s honor at 6 p.m. Nov. 22, before their home opener against Jefferson.

Aplin scored more than 1,000 career points for the Chiefs in the ‘70s before playing at USF, where he still ranks among the top 10 in Bulls history in career field goal percentage (53.2 percent).

Aplin then turned to coaching. In 31 seasons, he led Chamberlain to a 516-276 record. His resume includes 11 playoff appearances, three trips to the final four, and two berths in the state title game. He retired in 2009.
