Chamberlain catcher Kasie Hatfield's senior year has come to a cruel end before it even commenced.

Hatfield, a Penn State signee, tore her left ACL recently while playing basketball and will be lost for the year, Coach Bob Diez confirmed. Hatfield tore her right ACL the fall of her sophomore year, but returned in time for the 2008 season.

"It definitely hurts on both sides of the ball," Diez said Tuesday.

"She kind of runs our defenses and hits behind (USF signee) Stephanie Medina, and a lot of people don't want to pitch to Stephanie, so it gives us a nice alternative. We just have to count on some other people to step up."

Hatfield, who had surgery Jan. 12, hit .361 with 25 RBI last season, and threw out 12 of 16 base runners. She hit .362 as a sophomore.
