Clearwater athletic director Kathy Biddle said the school has hired Winter Springs boys basketball coach Paul Lang to take over its girls program.

Lang coached Winter Springs the past two seasons. He replaces Tom Shaneyfelt, who stepped down after 20 seasons and 650 career wins to coach the Tornadoes boys basketball program.

Lang, 32, said he made the move because his fiancee is from Tampa and is currently working at All Children's Hospital. He also applied for Clearwater’s boys program.

“It was a family move,” Lang said. “I was looking to coach and teach down here. It really didn’t matter whether it was girls or boys. I just love coaching basketball.

“I know there are some big shoes to fill in the position, but the great thing is that Tom still is here and in the building.”

Biddle said Lang and two other finalists – former Tampa Catholic girls coach Nancy Kroll and former Clearwater boys coach Allen Carden – interviewed Monday before the decision was made.

“Paul was a really strong candidate that we feel will work well with our girls,” Biddle said.

Lang currently is running a camp and will not be able to meet the girls until after the first week of July.
