Clearwater's Tom Shaneyfelt is in a class of his own among bay area girls basketball coaches. In 2007, he became the first girls basketball coach in the area to win 500 games in his career.
Tonight, he can became the first in the area to reach 600 if the host Tornadoes beat St. Petersburg.
Shaneyfelt began his varsity coaching career in 1985 at Osceola, where he had four 20-win seasons and finished as the district runnerup four times. In 1993, he came over to Clearwater, where he has led the program to district titles in 15 of the past 17 seasons and guided the Tornadoes to the state tournament seven times.
It is a bit of rarity to reach even the 500-win plateau in girls basketball, where the turnover rate among coaches is high. Only one other coach, Indian Rocks Christian's Phil Farver, has got to 500 wins. Farver got that mark in last week's win over St. Petersburg Catholic.
