The North Suncoast’s top tennis player is headed to FAMU.
Wiregrass Ranch senior Courage Okungbowa has signed with the Rattlers on Wednesday during the largest February signing in Wiregrass history, Bulls coach and athletic director Dave Wilson said.
Okungbowa is the Times’ reigning two-time North Suncoast player of the year. As a junior last spring, he appeared in Pasco County’s first state championship match since 2005 before falling in straight sets to finish runner-up.
His family’s story – their emigration from a rural farm in Nigeria to America, and a car crash on their move to Florida that nearly killed them – has been chronicled by the Times, ESPN and Yahoo.
Other Wiregrass athletes who signed Wednesday were: cross country star Nikita Shah (Harvard), lineman Ben Botteron (Webber International), softball player Rachael Heath (Saint Leo) and soccer teammates A.J. Blount (USF), Dayton Wetherby (Navy) and Berlin Waters (Saint Leo).
