Dante Fowler to miss Blake game for disciplinary reasons

Lakewood defensive end Dante Fowler will miss this week's Class 5A, District 8 game at Blake for disciplinary reasons.

Fowler confirmed via text message that he will sit out this week because he talked backed to coaches during a season-opening win against Seminole. The Spartans have a bye the following week (Sept. 16) and Fowler said he will return for the Sept. 23 home game against Dunedin.

Fowler, a five-star recruit who has already committed to Florida State, is a force on the defensive line and his absence will be big for Lakewood, which lost to Blake 31-28 last year.

The Spartans started the season by upsetting Countryside in the preseason. Last week, Lakewood needed a fourth-quarter rally to beat Seminole, which won two games a year ago. The inability for the heavily favored Spartans to win big frustrated some of the players.

In August, Fowler said he had a goal of registering at least 25 sacks this season. That number will be harder to obtain by missing this week's game.

This is the second time Fowler has been suspended in the past two seasons. Last year, Fowler was ejected from a game against Boca Ciega after an on-field altercation and served a one-game suspension. He initially was suspended for three games by the Florida High School Athletic Association but had it reduced to one game after an appeal.
