The Plant football team's trio of highly touted recruits -- running back James Wilder Jr., quarterback Phillip Ely and tackle Tony Posada -- appear to be nearly ready to announce their college decisions.
Panthers coach Robert Weiner said Saturday he believes that Ely and Posada will made their college commitments before preseason practice begins on the first weekend of August.
He said both are very close to making a decision, with Ely having narrowed his choice down to five unnamed schools and Posada down to a pair.
Ely, who just won the "Most Versatile" award at this week's ESPN Elite 11 Quarterback Camp owns offers from the likes of Ole Miss, LSU, Clemson, Wake Forest, Arizona State and USF. He is ranked the 16th best quarterback recruit by ESPN and sixth by Rivals.com (See recent Rivals.com highlights of Ely from the Nike Gainesville Camp below).
Posada owns offers from Michigan, Tennessee, Kansas, Louisville and USF.
Wilder, ranked the No. 3 overall recruit in the nation by Rivals.com and the No. 1 athete prospect, might take a little longer, Weiner said, but he believed he will make his decision before the season starts the first Friday in September. Wilder make an unofficial visit to Florida State this weekend. He is also considering Florida, Georgia, Alabama and Miami.
Weiner said Ely and Posada will likely make their announcements together at a news conference at the school. Depending on how quickly Wilder makes up his mind, he could also make his decision there or later in his own news conference.
