TAMPA — Once the clouds parted Thursday, the 3A-8 track and field meet turned into one of the more memorable district tournaments of the season. It was a day of stars but also upstarts.

The foregone conclusion of Steinbrenner winning the girls title was never in doubt. The Warriors had more than 100 points before the track events started. They scored 201.5 points, easily outdistancing a strong Hillsborough team (135.5). The Terriers were favorites on the boys side but Jefferson was not quite ready to cede the title.

Hillsborough led most of the day thanks to strong field events, but the Dragons dug in and pulled out the team title with 143 points to Hillsborough’s 128. The Dragons overcame a dropped baton in the 4x100-meter relay but picked it up and crossed the finish. Their 4x400 team had to fight off a great effort from Hillsborough but finished in 3:22.11 minutes to claim that event and the team title — their first in team history.

“We talk about it every day, doing things the right way,” said Dragons coach Jason Lane. “Track is a character sport, these kids showed that today.”

Steinbrenner senior Alexis Wright won the triple jump (36 feet, 6 inches), 100 hurdles (14.64 seconds) — a personal and school record — and 300 hurdles (47.22). Wright was pressed hard by Gaither senior Ariel Moore, especially in the 300 hurdles where Moore led most of the race.

The hottest event was the boys 110 hurdles. Jefferson senior Charles Booth ran the fastest qualifying time; Gaither senior Paul Barrett was the reigning county champion and school-record holder (14.50). However, it was Gaither freshman Samson Moore, who caught Booth after the third hurdle, and exploded across the finish line in 14.39 seconds — a personal record and school record.

“I knew my start wasn’t good,” Moore said. “I thought I was going to have to run the race of my life to catch him (Booth).”
Barrett faltered in the 110 but rallied to win the 300 hurdles in 38.43, as well as claim second in the high jump. Teammate and junior Kiana Bryant won the girls 100 (12.32) — a personal best — and came in second in the 200.

Chamberlain junior Andrea Aaron won both the shot put (36-11.5) and discus (112-6.5), and senior Neil MacInnes threw 165 feet in the discus to claim first by more than 33 feet.

“Neil is still far from his best throw,” said Chiefs coach Alex Collazo. “He can throw far beyond that (165) he just doesn’t know it yet.”
Terriers junior Jeremiah Green and senior Anthony Brown did what they were expected to, with Green sweeping the long (21-7.5) and triple (47-1) jumps. Brown took the 100 (10.82) and 200 (22.0).

Region track

2A-3: Annie Harwig of Tampa Catholic is dreaming big at state. The senior transfer from Texas won the girls pole vault at 10 feet, 6 inches at the Class 2A, Region 3 championships at Astronaut High in Titusville, but decided to keep going. She matched her career best of 11-0 (for the third week in a row), but failed on her next attempt at 11-6 because she was too tired.

“I’m excited for state,” Harwig said. “Everything started to come together last week and now … I’m on. I’m ready to go much higher. My goal is to get a bigger pole next week and go for 12 (feet).”

Other girls who qualified were Academy of the Holy Names’ Colleen Dohert in the 1,600 and 3,200, and Ryann McEnany in the 800 and long jump.

Boys qualifiers were Tampa Catholic’s Ken Mention in the 400 and Taylor Timmons in the shot put.

A-2: Tampa Prep’s Claire Snyder won the 1600 meters in 5 minutes, 7.4 seconds, and Seffner Christian’s Brandon Ardley won the boys long jump with a leap of 21 feet, 4.25 inches as both qualified for state at the region meet at Orlando First Academy. Snyder also qualified in the 3200.

Tampa Prep’s Carly Reiner placed second in the triple jump (33-2) and freshman Emma Golterman qualified in the 300 hurdles. The Terrapin girls also qualified in the 4x100 relay. Other girls qualifiers were Cambridge’s Madison Cox in the 200, Carrollwood Day’s Bailey Drury in the 400 and Seffner Christian’s Samantha Plager in the high jump.

Other boys qualifiers were Tampa Prep’s Miller Judge in the 800 along with the Terrapins’ 4x400 and 4x800 squads.
