TAMPA — From the outset Wednesday, the Class 4A District 6 meet was a three-horse race. Plant, Alonso and Wharton traded blows through the field events. Alonso dominated the jumps, Wharton dominated the hurdles and Plant dominated everything 800 meters and beyond.

By midday the boys contest was between Alonso and Plant. As the distance events got under way the Panthers began to pull away. The Plant boys finished with 184.5 points to outpace Alonso (151.5). The Plant girls scored 166.5, topping Wharton (135.5) and Alonso (127).

Alonso junior Quatasia Fantroy was unstoppable. An early-season quadriceps injury was not perceptible as she won the long jump (18 feet, 4.75 inches) and the triple jump (38-8.5). She completed the triple crown by winning the 200 meters (24.89 seconds).

Teammate and senior Jordan Davis also won the long jump (22-7.5) and triple jump (42-8). The Ravens rallied from a decimated roster early in the season.

“Emotionally, our kids have responded well,” said Ravens coach Roger Mills. “That being said, we haven’t done anything until we send some kids to states.”

Another great individual performance was Plant senior Michael Dvornik, who won the shot put (47-5) and discus (152-4.75). The Panthers also got some help from football players. Senior Antonio Crawford placed second in the 100 after a fantastic leap out of the blocks.

But it was the distance runners who carried the Panthers. The Plant girls took first and third in 1600, swept the 3200, and took first, second and third in the 800. The boys took first, second and fourth in the 1600 and 3200, and junior Kyle Groh gutted out a one-hundredth of a second win over Wharton senior Jayren Barginer in the 800. The girls 4x800 team broke a school record held since 1996, winning in 9 minutes, 28 seconds.

“We knew from last year, with three runners returning to the (4x800), we had a shot at that school record,” said Panthers coach Roy Harrison.

The unofficial fastest man at the meet was Tampa Bay Tech junior Deonte Williams. Williams He won the 100 (10.78) and 200 (22.12).

Wharton junior Mikayla Barber claimed titles in the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles.
