District triple crown for Wildcats' Gilbert

TAMPA – Instead of squandering Ravin Gilbert's sleek talents on a 4x100-meter relay team that already had lost two members, Wesley Chapel sprints coach Brian Colding entered her in a triumvirate of dashes at Friday's district meet.

The result: a triple crown, track-and-field style.

A Georgia State signee, Gilbert won the 100, 200 and 400 meters at the Class 2A, District 9 meet on a warm day of high stakes and brisk headwinds at Berkeley Prep. All three triumphs occurred in a condensed span of seven events.

"That was very hard," said Gilbert, whose time in the 100 (12.0 seconds) just missed the school record (11.98). "My first time actually competing like, competitively in (all three)."

Colding said he conjured the idea after two members of his 4x100 team – on which Gilbert had competed – left the team. Friday marked only the second time Gilbert has run the 400, where she prevailed by nearly a second and a half.

"She could've run the 4x100 for fun," said Colding, who watched the Wildcat girls place fourth in the team standings. "Or she could've gotten some quality points for us and herself."

On the boys side, Anclote was a surprise third-place finisher, collecting 93 points behind a constellation of standouts. Senior distance star Argishti Gazari won the 1,600 and 3,200, while Alonzo Pettiford won the triple jump and placed third in both the 100 and 200. Spencer Guerette won the 800 and was runnerup to Gazari in the 1,600.

Wesley Chapel junior Courtney Prengaman (girls high jump) was the North Suncoast's only other district champion. The top four finishers in each event advanced to Thursday's Region 3 championships in Titusville.
