The FILA Cadet Freestyle & Greco Nationals were held in Akron, Ohio, last weekend and attracted some of the best grapplers from around the country. Placing in this tournament would not only earn them All-America status but would place them among the sport's elite.
While the usual local front-runner in these tournaments is the Brandon Wrestling Club, it was the Spring Hill Wrestling Club that shined this time around.
John Dreggors and Cody Ross each brought home national titles for the Eagles, the second and third of the year and in the history of the program.
For Dreggors, who won the first crown at the NSHCA Junior Nationals last month, the victory was extra sweet. The heavyweight won a 3-2 decision over his Oviedo rival Doug Vollaro in the Greco national final to do it. Dreggors also placed third in freestyle as one of only two local dual All-Americans.
James Flint had the best showing for Brandon with a runnerup finish in Greco at the 50-kilogram weight class. Flint lost a 2-1 decision to Iowa’s Philip Laux in the final. Travis Berridge, who finished in fourth place at 69 kilograms, earned All-America status.
Dylan Lucas, a state champion for Tampa Bay Christian this past season, also competes for the Brandon Wrestling Club. He was the other local to earn dual All-America status with a national title victory over fellow Brandon wrestler Kevin Norstrem at 46 kilograms in the Greco final. Lucas also placed fifth in freestyle.
