The Durant Cougars are licking their wounds heading into Friday's playoff game with Gaither.

Durant (7-3), the Class 7A, District 8 champion, will be without starting running back Zach Hooper and will most likely be missing starting fullback Jamarlon Hamilton as well, coach Mike Gottman said at Wednesday's practice. Hamilton sustained a concussion in last week's 28-20 loss at King.

Hamilton, the Cougars' leading rusher with 1,038 yards and eight touchdowns on 157 carries, and Hooper, who has 47 carries for 293 yards and a touchdown, will be replaced by freshman Chris Atkins and sophomore Johnny Jones, respectively. Atkins, who scored two touchdowns last week, has carried the ball 49 times for 277 yards, and Jones has 29 carries for 134 yards.

Senior Mike Stephens, a starting cornerback who also returns kicks and punts, will line up at halfback as well, Gottman said.

Gaither (7-3), runnerup in Class 7A-7, will come into the game with no major injuries, coach Jason Stokes said Tuesday.
