The status of Durant linebacker Rance Rutherford, the team's leading tackler, is unclear for this week's must-win game at Newsome following a knee injury he sustained in Friday's loss to Plant City.

Rutherford, who missed his entire sophomore year with a left kneecap injury, hurt the same knee Friday. Coach Mike Gottman said Monday morning there's no structural damage, but the injury is "really painful."

"I don't know if he is (going to play) or not," said Gottman, whose 6-2 club must defeat the Wolves to remain in contention for a postseason berth. "He has some pretty good swellng on it right now, we've just got to see if we can get the swelling down."
A 6-foot, 185-pound senior, Rutherford leads the Cougars with 58 tackles, and has one caused fumble.
