TAMPA — With the postseason right around the corner, Wiregrass Ranch has not forgotten where it was at this point last season: The Bulls were 2-5 in dual meets going into the SAC meet.
This time around, the Bulls have followed their motto — “Reverse the record” — and are 5-2 in dual meets.
Wiregrass wrapped up a regular-season turnaround against Gulf on Wednesday night, with the boys and girls winning 82-75 and 120-37, respectively, at the New Tampa YMCA.
“The depth made the difference tonight,” Wiregrass boys coach Tanner Schmitz said. “(Gulf) has some studs. It came down to we had more depth than they had.
“We have turned the corner as a program and team. We’re going into Friday’s SAC meet gunning for Land O’Lakes and Sunlake.”
The Wiregrass Ranch boys excelled in the 400-yard freestyle (3:42.82) and took several individual events, including the 500 free (5:30.02) by Stephen Van Bemmel and the 200 individual medley (2:16.45) by senior Alex Hughes.
The Bulls’ Michael Hernandez picked up two wins, taking the 50 (24.84) and 100 free (55.43). Gulf’s Hunter Swartsel continued his torrid pace and captured the 100 butterfly (56.98) and the 100 breaststroke (1:08.78).
"It’s exciting to watch how our team has improved each week to this point,” Hernandez said.
On the girls side, the Bulls dominated the relay events, taking the 200 medley (2:04.27), 200 free (1:58.54) and 400 free (4:30.02).
