Former Robinson High pitching standout and big-league prospect Steven Evarts was arrested Sunday on charges of felony battery and marijuana possession at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino.
Evarts, 22, was arrested just before noon Sunday by Seminole Indian Reservation Police. According to police spokesman Gary Bitner, authorities were called to a room registered in Evarts' name to address a dispute between two women.
They subsequently discovered Evarts had an outstanding warrant on a third-degree felony battery charge. Upon searching him, they found a small baggie containing marijuana in his sock. Evarts was booked and released that evening on $2,500 bond.
According to Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office records, the latest arrest is Evarts' fourth since 2006.
A 6-foot-4 left-hander, he earned Times first-team all-Hillsborough County honors his senior year (9-3, 0.90 ERA) and was taken by the Atlanta Braves with the 43rd overall pick in the Major League draft that summer. Evarts reportedly got a signing bonus of $800,000, but never rose above the Single-A level.
