Watching Berkeley Prep outside hitter Jordan Burgess swing at a volleyball makes one pity  those on the other side of the net.

The 6-foot-1 junior strikes with ferocity unrivaled in Hillsborough County, but what makes Burgess the kind of player who is the frontrunner for county player of the year is her all-around game.

Take this past weekend’s Tampa Bay Invitational. Berkeley Prep was one of four defending state champs in the 16-team field, and Burgess was the event’s unquestioned MVP as the Bucs went 5-0 and won the tournament.

Burgess averaged 6.3 kills and 3.2 digs in 12 match games, all Berkeley wins. In the tournament final win over Deland, she had 20 kills and 13 digs. In a semifinal win over Fort Myers, she had 23 kills, six digs and eight service points.

Berkeley Prep (21-2), aiming for a second-straight Class 3A state title, is ranked No. 1 in the state and No. 21 in the nation by MaxPreps.
