TAMPA — A 14-13 first-half grinder gave way to a 35-point third quarter and a furious finish that saw Admiral Farragut top Carrollwood Day 49-35 Friday.
The Blue Jackets poured on a steady dose of Cortavious Givens, who gained more than 100 yards in the first half. Fellow senior Napoleon Maxwell carried 12 times for 125 yards and two TDs.
Guns blazed from both sides to start the third. AFA had bruised the Patriots with runs from Givens and Napoleon, then called quarterback Dalton Collins’ number, catching the Patriots by surprise as Collins broke a 40-yarder for the score. Two plays later AFA was in the end zone again.
The Patriots countered with a TD to Mike Smith. Then the teams traded scores before the momentum swings really hit.
Maxwell took a kickoff 85 yards for the score. Patriot Max Frankel broke 12 tackles on a 12-yard TD run a few plays later. AFA was at its own 45 when Michael Morse and Dominic Cuono got huge tackles for loss, and Morse blocked a punt. It set the Pats up 20 yards out, down by seven.
“There are some situations where we have to respond even being such a young coaching staff,” AFA coach Ryan Hearn said.
The Blue Jackets responded by forcing CDS back 5 yards and into a turnover on downs.
