TAMPA — Tied with Plant for the best record in Class 8A, District 6, Friday’s matchup with Alonso was supposed to be a tuneup game for Wharton with Plant visiting next week.

No one told Alonso that was its role, as the Ravens played inspired football to upset Wharton 33-15 on the road.

The Ravens (4-3, 1-2) jumped on Wharton (6-2, 2-1) early. Sophomore quarterback Chris Oladokun threw two first-half touchdowns, and junior Zantavious Showers added a 57-yard touchdown run.

“We were hearing what everyone was saying; nobody gave us a chance,” Oladokun said. “Wharton is a really good team, but we believed we could win and we fought hard.”

Wharton started the second half strong. Jeff Keil scored his second rushing touchdown of the game. Then, on the next Alonso possession, the Wildcat defense forced a safety.

Wharton was threatening to score again. But Chase Litton threw an interception that was returned 99 yards for a score by senior defensive back  Derius Davis. The Ravens held Litton without a touchdown pass, got multiple sacks and forced key turnovers.

“Credit to our defense,” Oladokun said. “Our offense slowed down in the second half, but the defense really played big for us to get the win.”
