HOLIDAY — The showdown for the Class 5A, District 7 title went Anclote’s way, as the Sharks earned the first district title in the school’s five-year existence.
Senior running back Willie Barrett had three touchdowns rushing and one receiving for Anclote, which will host Tarpon Springs in the first round of the playoffs. Hudson, as district runnerup, will play at 5A-8 champion Lakewood in the first round.
Anclote’s offense only needed three minutes to take a 7-0 lead when Barrett went in motion, and quarterback Brandon Vinkler found him down the sideline for a 37-yard score.
After a punt by Hudson, Barrett found the end zone for the second of his three scores of the first half, this one a run down the left side from 52 yards.
The Sharks defense put the next points on the board when Devonte Luis scooped up a Hudson fumble and returned it 21 yards.
Hudson finally put some points on the board on their first play on offense following the fumble, when Zach Russell took it right up the gut from 65 yards to cut the lead to 21-7.
With three seconds left in the first half on their 40 yard line, Anclote ran it instead of kneeling, and it worked out as Barrett took it 60 yards for a 28-7 halftime lead.
A scary moment came with six minutes left in the game as Hudson’s Noah Siegrist was injured after returning a kick.
