TAMPA — Armwood capped a perfect run through Class 6A, District 8 with help from Trevor Laurent’s two touchdown catches.
After Dakari Hodges’ 3-yard run put the Hawks (9-0, 8-0) up 10-0 in the second quarter, Laurent helped put the Chiefs (4-6 4-4) away. He caught passes of 49 and 14 yards from Noah Johnson to give Armwood a 24-0 halftime lead.
Laurent finished with 93 receiving yards.
Chiefs senior quarterback Josh Bennett was battered by the Hawks. He finished with 122 yards of offense. But his 50 rushing yards came on 24 carries.
“You were going to have to knock me out to take me out of there,” Bennett said.
Chamberlain went for two onside kicks and a fake punt.
Sophomore Will Shidler had punts of 57 and 52 for it, both of which went out of bounds. His counterpart, junior Sterling Hofrichter, hit a field goal of 42 yards and booted six kickoffs into the end zone.
“We’re used to (adversity),” said Chamberlain coach Cam Jones, who took over the team just three weeks before the season. “We’ve been dealt different hands.
“But it only makes the kids stronger players and people.”
