VALRICO — Lucas Jose kicked a 23-yard field goal with 3:16 left in the fourth quarter Friday night to lift Bloomingdale to a 24-21 victory over Alonso in a Class 8A, District 6 clash.

The Bulls improved to 3-2 overall, while Alonso fell to 3-3. Both teams are now 1-1 in district play.

Bloomingdale led 21-14 at halftime, then both the Bulls and Ravens ended long drives with red-zone interceptions to begin the second half.

Still trailing by seven in the fourth quarter, Alonso’s Chris Oladokun connected with Derius Davis for a touchdown to tie the game at 21.
Bloomingdale then answered with a clock-consuming drive that culminated in Jose’s field goal to put the Bulls back on top.

With time running out, Alonso nearly pulled off a miracle. A 42-yard reception to Davis put Alonso in position to attempt a Hail Mary from 38 yards out, but a Bloomingdale defender batted the ball down in the end zone to preserve the victory.

“I think these kids want me balder,” quipped Bloomingdale coach John Booth after the game. “Our backs were up against the wall at the end, and they came up with a big play.”
