GULFPORT — Boca Ciega finished its season strong by beating Clearwater, which finished its season winless.

The Tornadoes (0-10) got the ball first. On their opening drive, they systematically drove down the field on a variety of rushing plays. After taking more than half of the quarter off the clock, they finished the drive with a 5-yard touchdown run by senior Dafranco Rutledge.

The Pirates (3-8) got on the board early in the second quarter when senior Tre Benatti converted a 30-yard field goal, cutting their deficit to 6-3.

A few minutes later, however, Rutledge, who finished with 90 yards on 22 carries, picked up his second touchdown run of the night. Clearwater failed on the two-point conversion and went into halftime with a 12-3 lead.

Boca Ciega got the ball to begin the second half, and it got itself right back in the game on a 1-yard touchdown run by sophomore quarterback Saivion Smith.

The Tornadoes had a great opportunity to extend their 12-10 lead to begin the fourth quarter but failed to score despite having it first and goal from the 4.

The Pirates took full advantage and took a 17-12 lead on a 31-yard run by Jaylaan Wimbush with seven minutes left to play.

Clearwater had an opportunity to steal a win but time ran out after it got back into the red zone.
