Brandon slogged its way to a 17-6 victory over Blake on Friday at James “Big Jim” Williams Stadium.
The Eagles (1-0) scored twice in the second half to build up its advantage. Quarterback Brandon Jones scored on a 12-yard run with 9:14 remaining in the game, just minutes after fullback Jonathan Jones (no relation) capped off a 43-yard drive with a 9-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter.
The lone score for the Yellow Jackets (0-1) came on a Corey Bennett 12-yard run with 2:01 left in the game. Brandon Jones finished with 95 yards rushing on 11 carries and 98 yards passing for the Eagles, while Jonathan Jones added 83 yards.
Brandon’s option attack helped it dominate field possession, including four first-half drives inside Blake’s 31-yard line in the first half.
The Eagles, however, only yielded a 26-yard field goal by Tyler Beacom out of that success. Interceptions and penalties helped negate the other scoring opportunities.
Blake also struggled because of miscues. It was penalized seven times for 64 yards in the first half, and quarterback Christian Robinson’s receivers dropped four passes.
