ST. PETERSBURG — Canterbury coach Bill Jones had a message for his team as it headed to the locker room to wait out a second-quarter lightning delay.

“I’m going to lay into them,” Jones said.

Jones is going to have to wait until next week to see if his talk worked. With 1:40 left in the second and the Crusaders leading Miami Zion Lutheran Christian 14-6, the game was halted. Due to Zion administration’s request that the team not cross Alligator Alley after midnight, the game was called off when it couldn’t be resumed quickly enough.

It will count as an official win for Canterbury.

The Crusaders wasted no time scoring. Quarterback Josh Belton hit Hunter Coia on a 16-yard pass on the first drive to take a 7-0 lead. The Lions scored in the second quarter on a 21-yard touchdown pass, but the extra point was blocked.

Dontell Green scored just before the delay on a 24-yard run to give Canterbury its final score. In between, the Canterbury offense had a fumble and a sack on fourth down.

Sammy Faucette led the Crusaders with 101 yards on eight carries.
