TAMPA — With Class 2A-5 wrapped up, Friday’s district contest was a chance to hit individual benchmarks as well as end the regular season on a high note. Carrollwood Day did both in a 28-7 win over Northside Christian.
The Patriots have been on a tear since their Week 2 loss to Indian Rocks Christian, averaging more than 44 points per game.
“Our motto (since the IRC loss) has been win and we’re in,” Patriots coach Lane McLaughlin said. “It has really come together. Our quarterback (Taylor King) came around, we got some leadership from our seniors and got better every week.”
CDS junior Mike Smith broke Andy Embody’s single-season receiving record, with 112 yards and a touchdown. Unofficially, Smith caps the regular season at 998 yards, edging Embody’s 973 from a year ago. King was 9-of-16 for 220 yards and three TDs, and eclipsed 1,900 yards passing for the season. He also threw an 83-yard pass to junior Elias Earley on Friday.
Senior Max Frankel recovered three fumbles in the game. Northside junior Kevin Ryan returned a fumble 80 yards but was run down by Smith at the Patriot 15. Northside used a quarterback tandem of Mike Abraham and freshman Griffin Alstott, who combined for 177 yards.
