TAMPA — If there  were any doubt about which 2A-5 team was lining up for the second playoff spot behind Indian Rocks Christian, Carrollwood Day  settled it Friday  with a  40-20 win over  Cambridge Christian . The Patriots’ win and Northside Christian’s loss to

Canterbury puts CDS  in the playoffs for the second year in a row.

The Patriots (6-3, 4-1)  got it done with defense Friday . Lancers quarterback Garrett Young posed the biggest threat. He  accounted for 248 yards of offense but was stymied in  critical situations. On the third drive of the first half,  the Patriots  pushed the Lancers (4-4, 2-3) back 18 yards to  set up a short field, which  they scored on.

On the last drive of the first half, Cambridge reached  the Patriots’ 10 but Mike Smith forced  a fumble, which  Dominic Cuono took  82 yards for the score to make it 20-7. Then on the first drive in the second half,  the Lancers were at  the Patriots’ 3.  Young was  stuffed  for a turnover on downs.

“(Young) was their biggest threat and we shut him down,” Cuono said. “It was a great game, everybody hitting hard.”

Young  was 9-for-23  for 174 yards and two TDs.  The Patriots’ Elias Earley had 53 yards rushing and a TD as well as a 55-yard sideline catch  from Taylor King to put the Patriots up 33-7.
