ST. PETERSBURG — Clearwater Central Catholic scored three quick touchdowns in the first quarter before the referees delayed the game as the lights failed to turn on at St. Petersburg Catholic’s Joe Paul Stadium. When the lights came on, the spotlight was on QB Jeff Smith, who was responsible for three of his team’s first four scores as the Marauders routed the Barons.

Play of the game: On the second play from scrimmage, CCC ran a screen to CJ Cotman, who had all five offensive linemen downfield blocking. The sophomore playmaker weaved for a 39-yard score.

Stars of the game: Cotman and fellow sophomores Dilan Scargle, Jervon Newton, Jerquan Newton, Tyler McDonald, and Jakob Parks. Scargle and Jervon each had a touchdown while McDonald and Jerquan were constantly in the Baron backfield.

Stats of the game: In Smith’s brief stint, the Marauder QB was 5-for-6 for 79 yards and two touchdowns, plus a 14-yard TD run in the second quarter. … CCC punted only once.

Final word: “We played a lot of young kids. We had two sophomores at running back that I think are going to be really great players along with Jakob Parks at quarterback. Dilan Scargle made a great catch on the sideline.” — CCC coach John Davis
