ST. PETERSBURG — Countryside kept Northeast scoreless and winless.

After a touchdown on their first possession, the Cougars (3-1, 1-0 Class 7A, District 9) would lose the ball on an interception and fumble but still led 29-0 at the break.

Each of their touchdowns came on a short field in Northeast territory. Thirteen of those points were set up by turnovers.

The second half started out sloppy as both teams fumbled on their initial possession. Quarterback Trent Chmelik, who came in to relieve starter Robby Hicks, hit Chris Ryan for a 21-yard score that made it 36-0.

Countryside’s final score was set up by a 49-yard completion from Chmelik to Eric Patten. A few plays later, Patten would carry the ball into the end zone from 3 yards.

Hicks completed 11 of 16 passes for 161 yards and a touchdown.

On defense, the Cougars were just as dominant, holding the Vikings (0-4, 0-1) to a single first down.

“We’ve got some guys banged up,” Countryside coach Jared Davis said. “We knew guys were going to have to play a lot of snaps. We need the bye week to get healthy.”
