TAMPA — After starting the season with losses to powerhouse district foes Jefferson and Armwood, Hillsborough continued its bounce-back Friday, routing Lennard 49-0.
The Dwayne Lawson-led offense rolled up 505 yards in the Class 6A, District 8 victory as Hillsborough evened its mark at 2-2 overall and in the district.
The easy night started on the first play from scrimmage, an 82-yard touchdown run for running back Kenny Gunn. He added a 15-yard scoring run in the second quarter and finished with 139 yards in the game. Lawson, a junior quarterback, added a 44-yard touchdown run, and threw touchdown passes to Junaid James (25 yards) and Jon Hughes (35 yards) in the first half. Running backs Rudy Dawson and Eric Torres had short touchdown runs to complete the Terriers’ scoring.
Hillsborough’s ground game totaled 321 yards while Lawson completed seven of 12 passes for 184 yards. Meanwhile, the Terriers defense recovered two fumbles and forced the Longhorns to turn the ball over on downs six times.
Lennard was led by running back Darron Daniel, who ran for 126 yards on 16 carries.
